Presidential Research Development Grant Program

The PRDG Program is overseen by our newly appointed Provost for Research Dr. Salomon Amar and is managed by the Office of Sponsored Programs.

It is anticipated that 4-6 grants will be awarded from among two pools of applicants:

• Grants for projects in the biomedical and health sciences
• Grants for projects in the liberal arts & sciences, behavioral, social, and educational sciences (including such fields as psychology, education, law, and social work), technology, and business.

Grant awards may range from $7,500 to $15,000. Requests for support of up to $20,000 will be considered for projects that typically involve greater expense (e.g., laboratory-based research), but clear justification must be provided in the application.

The programs are scaled to fall between small pilot project support that is or might be provided at the individual school level through a variety of mechanisms (release time, small internal pilot grants, general laboratory support, etc.) and the larger Seed Funding Grant Program (which currently is limited to biomedical and health sciences research, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and preferably inter-campus collaboration).  These grants are not intended for terminal projects; rather, the aim is to advance selective research projects within the highly competitive national environment for external funding.

Applicants will be expected to:

• Provide specific aims, background, and the significance of the proposed research.
• Describe the approach to be undertaken and the plan to reach the intended research milestones.
• Provide a specific plan for seeking external funding, including identifying potential sponsors/programs for external support and target dates for submitting external funding applications.
• Include a biosketch.
• Submit a budget and budget justification that details the grant funding request and any complementary support being provided by the applicant’s school.

Applications may not include a request for faculty salary support, but may request support for staff support, such as technicians or research or lab assistants (particularly students). 

Applications will require sign-off by the applicant’s Department Chair (where appropriate) and Dean confirming school resources being applied to the project are available, including provision of protected time for the applicant to conduct the proposed research and compatible with the faculty commitment to a given school should an award be made.  Schools are encouraged to offer additional internal matching support for projects that require additional resources, including faculty release time or summer salary support, to accomplish the project’s aims.

Proposals are due by November 13, 2017. It is anticipated that awards will be made for the period January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018.  Follow the application guidelines and instructions, and fill out the cover page to be used as part of proposal submission.

Applications for the first year of the programs will be reviewed by two selection committees consisting of members of the undergraduate and graduate Deans and the Chair of the Touro College Research Council.  The Provost for Research, The Provost for the Graduate and Professionals Schools, the Vice President for Undergraduate Education, the Vice President of the Graduate Division will serve as ex officio members of both selection committees.

Recommendations will be forwarded to President Kadish for awarding grants.
