Wearing the right clothes can make a difference in how you are viewed as a prospective employee. A polished, professional look matters. In general, clothes that are very trendy detract from a serious, professional appearance. Below is a list of guidelines to assist you in dressing for success.

FOR MEN:
- Suit – A dark (blue, gray or black) conservative two or three button suit.
- Shirt – White long-sleeve dress shirt with a white undershirt; button your top button!
- Tie – Choose a tie that coordinates with your suit. Overly busy patterns should be avoided.
- Shoes – Black, polished shoes are standard business attire. Wear dark dress socks.
- Jewelry should be minimal and appropriate for a business setting; no overly ostentatious watches, necklaces, and no earrings
- Accessories – a notebook, portfolio or briefcase should be carried, containing extra copies of your resume and a good pen.
- Grooming – You should look clean and neat. Of course, proper hygiene is absolutely necessary. Avoid cologne or after-shave with a strong aroma.
FOR WOMEN:
- Suit – A dark conservative suit and below-the-knee length skirt. A blazer with blouse and skirt is a possible second choice to a suit. A jacket should always be worn. Employers view sweaters as too casual, so they should not be worn.
- Blouse – A white or light-colored blouse that is not low cut, sheer or sleeveless.
- Shoes – Black or dark brown, polished, closed-toe shoes with a 1-1 1⁄2" heel are standard (no spike heels); lower-heeled styles may be worn depending on the wearer’s preference.
- Jewelry should be minimal and appropriate for a business setting.
